round evaporator pad for Skuttle 90SH drum humidifier by Steve Michelin (Ringwood Ne US)

A thermometer I received as a present included a hygrometer (measures humidity) and I was suprised to discover that the humidity in my home dropped below 30% during the cold winter months. My wife read that too dry air isn't good for wood furniture and I saw that dry air also lead to cracks along interior drywall seams as they contract. My hope is to lessen this damage by keeping the humidy at or above 40%. Optimal is 50%, but unrealistic for an old house. So, if a minimal investment results in less painting (don't have to patch and repaint cracked seams and corners) and makes my wife feel good about furniture, I'm all for it. = Here's the minimal investment part. In the past, I hesitated turning on the humidfier because I knew that the more it was used, the more mineral deposits would accumulate on the evaporator pad. And, being thrifty, I used to clean and resue the pad at the end of each season. It was a chore. using a five-gallon pail, I'd soak it in vinegar to first soften hard water deposits. Then "wash" it with soap and lots of water. What was I thinking !? No more. = Time is money, right !? I now buy evaporator pads in bulk (box of 5), directly from Scuttle. Even after shipping, buying direct in bulk offers a discount and cuts out the middle man markup. [ I found markup to be around 40% at Lowe's & Home Depot.] Now, I save time because I just discard the old pad and replace it with a new one at the end of each heating season. Less painting (Ya-a-ay!), my wife doesn't ask about her furniture, and I don't spend a Saturday morning in April trying to clean and re-use an evaporator pad. [ ] One thing I didn't figure on though was that my wife has a list (of course) of OTHER chores for me to do ;-) [ ] P.S. I also had my plumber repace the On/Off valve for the water supply. Installed a 1/4 turn ball valve which is much more durable that the cheap compression fit of the original gate valve clamped onto a water supply pipe. It's a few more dollars up front, but no worries about shutting the water supply to the humidfier off every summer and back on again for the winter.
